You can make various trips from Porturama. The places mentioned are only a few kilometers away.
Coja
The river Alva meanders through this beautiful village. Côja proudly bears the name of Princes of the Alva. Beautiful old churches and little chapels are found on the shores of the river.
There is a nice central square with shady trees that houses a few cosy terraces that invite you for a cool beer or a glass of sweet Portwine.
Nearby you will find a public beach (praya fluvial) that is well visited by the locals in the summer months but certainly not overcrowded. When finished bathing they serve cool drinks, ice cream and more here.
Santuario Nossa Senhora do Montalto
Arganil is worth taking the long way home.
Not only because of the weekly market on Thursday mornings where you can get locally grown fruit and vegetables but also purchase clothes, hats and traditional pottery.
Just outside Arganil you find the “Santuario Nossa Senhora de Montalto” this little old church sits on top of a hill overlooking Arganil, it’s a beautiful drive. There is a walkway going up there as well, complete with ancient stone stairs surrounded by eucalyptus trees which release a nice and refreshing smell. Beware, the walk is beautiful but steep!
Tábua cannot be forgotten on this page.
It is the main town in this area and there are many little villages covered by the county of Tábua. Amongst them is Mouronho. Because of this Tábua is the “business heart” of the region.
All important public services are localized here and there is not much to be found for the tourist however: There are a few local stores and a central square with a very good pastry shop. Early March there is the annual “Feira de Queijo” (Cheese market). The cheeses sold here are made in a traditional way and are very tasty.
Every Sunday morning there is a market with plants and live small animals such as chickens, roosters and rabbits. There are long tables on which grilled chickens from a bbq are served with a lots of beer or wine. Tábua also has a few good restaurants, you will find a review elsewhere on this site.
The characteristic town of Santa Comba Dão lies idyllic on the river Dão, a side arm of the river Mondego.
Because its situated so beautifully it appeals immediately, add the old buildings, the unique views through small alleys and you have a great tourist destination. Santa Comba Dão is situated on the slopes above the river.
Buildings are often in Baroque style and there are beautiful little squares everywhere. The church “Igreje Matriz” from the 18th century forms the heart of the characteristic town.
Ecopista
Nearby Santa Comba Dão you find the beautiful bicycle path called “Ecopista” This bicycle path runs from Santa Comba Dão to Viseu and takes in total 49 km. Because it used to be a railroad (it closed in 1988) it’s never very steep. A beautiful trip that takes you via old station buildings of which a few are rebuild to bars or small restaurants. Large parts of the ecopista run along side the Dão river which gives you breathtaking views.

On the river Alva, at a distance of 5 km, you can take a SUP (Stand Up Paddling) lesson. A beautiful afternoon on the water! It is also possible for the inexperienced “supper” to paddle down the river in one afternoon after an introduction of Sabine (owner / coach).
